Guys, I'm tired!
Last night, I woke up with Katy Perry's 'Dark Horse' stuck in my head. It was about 2 AM and, instead of sweet dreams and restorative slumber, I kept hearing 'a perfect storm (perfect storm)' over and over again. Sadly, this is not an unusual occurrence. I'm not sure if this is a side effect of listening to the radio all day every day or just a nod to the overall catchiness of pop music, but it can get very frustrating.
Because once that song is stuck in my head, there is no getting it out. Even if I manage to fall asleep again, its always a restless sleep with 'Dark Horse' or 'Bad Romance' or (and this is the worst) whatever Justin Bieber song is popular playing on loop as a soundtrack to my dreams. And it stays there, rolling around, repeating over and over again, once I wake up for real in the morning. And its there all day long. I call these songs earworms, because once they worm their way into your head (via your ears, obvs), they just burrow and nest and never leave.
The worst part of the earworm syndrome is that I can never remember all of the words to the songs that are stuck! Even if I know every last lyric during the day, at 2 AM, I can only remember one small phrase and it just repeats over and over again. 'Are you ready for (ready for) a perfect storm (perfect storm)' over and over and over. And I spend the rest of the night trying to remember the rest of the song. Its maddening
I've tried numerous ways to get said earworms out of my head. There's the old standby of singing 'Yellow Submarine' which may be the original earworm. But Katy Perry may just be more earwormy than The Beatles, because it rarely works. And even when it does, then I've got 'Yellow Submarine' stuck in my head. Its a vicious cycle.
Does anyone else have this problem? What song do you get stuck in your head? How do you get it out?
