Family Comes Together At Christmas

The kids have come home for Christmas and I couldn’t be happier!  The last few months have been ones of great transition for all of us what with two leaving home last summer.  I remember looking around the house after the youngest left in August and thinking how quiet it was.  While I had some nostalgia over the realization that my role as a mother was definitely changing I couldn’t help but be happy that they were moving into a more independent phase in life – pursuing their goals while going through the process of renting an apartment, buying their own food, learning how to pay bills and work through roommate issues.  Although life has thrown them some curves, I’ve enjoyed seeing how they’ve met their challenges with insight and grace.  Their leaving has given me more time with their Dad, and we’ve had the opportunity to take a couple of trips this Fall, with another adventure planned for in May.  My oldest left home some years ago but since Napa is his home, I have had the chance to see him more often than the other two, even though life keeps him pretty busy.  Like my family, The Napa radio stations have also undergone tremendous change this year.   I’ve loved working with the new music format on 99.3 The Vine and the all sports programming on 1440 KVON.  My hope is that I’ve been able to adapt with as much insight and grace as I’ve seen in my own kids.  Who would have thought that inspiration between parent and child could be a two-way street, and yet that’s what I see happening as I reflect over the last few months.  My guess is that I’m not alone in having that experience … and so I commend and applaud all families who may be reunited this holiday season … with the wish that those bonds will only be strengthened as we near the end of 2013.  I’m looking forward to a warm and wonderful Christmas Day and exciting new adventures both personally and professionally in the New Year!
