American Idol star Clay Aiken's main opponent in a North Carolina congressional primary died suddenly on Monday, while officials were still counting the votes in their extremely close race.
Keith Crisco, who was 70, fell at his home in Asheboro early on Monday afternoon, and was found dead at the scene by emergency responders. The longtime politician was trailing Aiken by about 300 votes out of nearly 30,000 cast in the Democratic primary, although state election officials had not completed the vote count.
Crisco's death puts Aiken into the general election against Republican incumbent Renee Elmers.
