Beyonce’s ‘Texas Hold ‘Em’ Debuts on Adult Alternative Airplay Chart

The format encompasses music under the umbrella of Americana, including material considered more specifically folk, country, blues, soul or other related styles.

The leader in spins for “Texas Hold ‘Em” on the Adult Alternative Airplay panel Feb. 23-29 was KVYN in Napa Valley, Calif. The station played the song 45 times in that span.

“KVYN decided to get on this Beyoncé track right away, mostly to support her musical evolution and dabbling in American roots music,” KVYN program director Nate Campbell tells Billboard. “So far, it’s working in our rotation and we’re happy to have ‘Country Beyoncé’ in our mix.”

Taylor Swift & Bon Iver Each Make First Adult Alternative Songs Chart Appearance With ‘Exile’

Taylor Swift and Bon Iver each make their maiden visit to Billboard‘s Adult Alternative Songs airplay chart, as “Exile” bows at No. 37 on the list dated Aug. 15.

Nate Campbell, who programs adult alternative KVYN Napa Valley, Calif., says, “We are quite supportive of pop artists who cross over to our format. This track from Taylor and Bon Iver is blending quite nicely into our daily mix. Our listeners in Napa like Taylor and more eclectic artists, as well. So it’s not too difficult playing ‘Exile’ on our station, just as we play ‘Watermelon Sugar’ by Harry Styles.

“We hope for more tracks like this, “Campbell says. “This kind of mixture of music, we believe, is how most people listen now in the world of Spotify.”

Harry Styles Is the World’s Biggest Young Rock Star. Why Won’t Rock Radio Play Him?

For all his current success and acclaim, the world’s biggest young rock star continues to be ignored at rock radio.

Despite his younger-leaning core following, it makes sense that Styles might also appeal to more Adult Alternative listeners, because his older musical reference points are actually much more in line with traditional Gen X and boomer sensibilities than the millennials and Gen Z-ers that mostly comprise his fanbase. “On KVYN, it wouldn’t be a rare thing to have a mix of music where Harry Styles was donuted in between Tom Waits and the Grateful Dead,” explains Nate Campbell, director of music and programming for the station. “I’m sure other radio programmers would laugh at this, and that’s fine with me. But that’s how we are choosing to try and entertain our market. And reception has been good, I’d say.”
